The Triple D challenge<\/a> has been a classic in the Columbia River Gorge<\/a> for literally decades (you can find lots of reports over the years, e.g., here<\/a> and here<\/a> and here<\/a> and …). The challenge consists of climbing Mt. Defiance<\/a> (5,010ft), Dog Mt<\/a>. (2,948ft), and Devils Rest<\/a> (2,402ft) in one day. Legend has it that the Mazamas<\/a> started the Triple D back in the day. So far, the challenge has always been completed by using a car to drive between the trailheads. That’s why all the listed Triple D FKTs<\/a> are either self-supported or supported. To the best of my knowledge, no one has completed a Triple D without using a car.<\/p>\n

I took up this challenge as a training opportunity and to put my packraft to good use. In pure human-powered and unsupported FKT style<\/a>, I carried every piece of gear from the beginning to the end. While the guidelines<\/a> allow to stash gear while bagging peaks, I carried my packraft on each of the 3 peaks.<\/p>\n

It took me 18:40:15<\/a> to get this done.<\/p>\n

The planned route<\/h3>\n

I wanted to start with Mt. Defiance, packraft over to Dog Mountain, then packraft down to the Bonneville dam, where I’d have to portage around, then continue to Devils Rest. The planned route was about 50mi long with 11,000ft of elevation pain. Out of the 50mi, about 27mi would be on foot, the rest packrafting on the Columbia. My spreadsheet said that the adventure could take up to 20h, but I figured it would all depend on the wind.<\/p>\n
