On Saturday, May 23, 2026, Megan and I will start a self-supported FKT attempt on the Mt. Adams to Mt. Hood challenge<\/a>, a 160-mile route that begins with a summit of Mt. Adams, traverses south through Washington and into Oregon, and finishes with a summit of Mt. Hood. I hold the current supported FKT from 2015 in 2d 16h 48m<\/a>, and as far as we know, no one has made an attempt since.<\/p>\n

The route only opens up in rare years. The PCT corridor needs to be melted out enough to run, while Mt. Hood still has to carry sufficient snow for a safe summit. This year fits that window (again). Snowpack and conditions align closely with 2015 (see visualization below), thus the remake!<\/p>\n

Going self-supported changes the calculus on gear, food, and pacing compared to the 2015 supported run. We expect to be quite slower.<\/p>\n

The biggest uncertainty is the weather forecast for Monday night, when we expect to summit Mt. Hood. The outlook is currently rather terrible (see below), and that will likely determine whether the attempt succeeds or has to be abandoned. We’ll see what the mountain gives us.<\/p>\n
