{"id":1728,"date":"2016-01-02T17:52:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-03T01:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/?p=1728"},"modified":"2022-12-21T13:05:29","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T21:05:29","slug":"new-wilson-river-traverse-yo-yo-fkt-0824","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/new-wilson-river-traverse-yo-yo-fkt-0824\/","title":{"rendered":"REPORT: New Wilson River Traverse Yo-Yo FKT: 08:24&#8217;14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, Sat, Jan 2, 2016, I felt\u00a0a strange urge to make another <a href=\"http:\/\/fastestknowntime.proboards.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fastest Known Time<\/a> (FKT)\u00a0attempt at\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/wilson-river-yo-yo-fkt-attempt\/\">Wilson River Traverse Yo-Yo<\/a>. So I did. Solo and unsupported. The conditions were better than on <a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/report-wilson-river-traverse-yo-yo-fkt-attempt\/\">Tuesday<\/a>, although there was still a fair amount of snow. I opted to go light and minimal for once, with no extra layers, no extra food, and no extra anything. I would either make it or not. There was no redundancy and no room for error this time. The pack felt very light and that was good.<\/p>\n<p>I started at 5:38am from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/Elk_Creek_Trailhead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elk Creek trailhead<\/a>. The car thermometer showed 21F. After rolling my ankle before\u00a0mile 2, I was primed for some pain and started cruising at the pace I thought I could sustain for 45mi and 8,000ft of elevation gain.<\/p>\n<p>A new sign at Wolf Creek (mile 15) said that the Wilson River trail was closed because of storm damage. I chose to ignore it\u00a0because there was no major issue to be seen during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/report-wilson-river-traverse-yo-yo-fkt-attempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tuesday\u00a0FKT attempt<\/a>. To my surprise,\u00a0the forest service had actually removed all downed trees\u00a0on the first 15mi already. Kudos!<\/p>\n<p>At the turnaround point (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/Keenig_Creek_Trailhead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keenig Creek<\/a>, mile 22.6) I checked my watch: 4h07min. That was good news. Now I only had to go back. Thankfully I knew my way.\u00a0The going was tough, yet\u00a0I kept pushing as much as I could while devouring\u00a0the few\u00a0gels that were\u00a0left. No time was to be wasted with non-essential activities.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a008:24&#8217;14 I finally reached the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonhikers.org\/field_guide\/Elk_Creek_Trailhead\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elk Creek trailhead<\/a>\u00a0again. I had just beaten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/110510230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my own 2014 record of 9h30min<\/a> by 1h and 6min.\u00a0In perfect conditions (i.e., without snow), this fantastic route could &#8220;easily&#8221; be done under 8h, I think.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1730\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/wrt_done.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1730\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1730\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1730\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/wrt_done.jpg?resize=600%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Done in 8:24'14.0.
