It connects deserts, desserts, mountains, canyons, forests, communities, people, and physical discomfort. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/aztrail.org\/the-trail\/map-of-the-trail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/aztrail.org\/the-trail\/map-of-the-trail<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>[pullquote]&#8221;He who would travel happily must travel light.&#8221;\u00a0 \u2014 Antoine de Saint-Exup\u00e9ry[\/pullquote]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fastestknowntime.com\/fkt\/michael-versteeg-arizona-trail-az-2016-10-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Veersteg<\/a> currently holds the supported (southbound) FKT in <a href=\"https:\/\/fastestknowntime.com\/fkt\/michael-versteeg-arizona-trail-az-2016-10-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"hms__days\">15d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hms__hours\">22h\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hms__minutes\">39m<\/span><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/fastestknowntime.com\/fkt\/jeff-garmire-arizona-trail-az-2019-04-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Garmire<\/a> set a new self-supported and overall (northbound) FKT in <a href=\"https:\/\/fastestknowntime.com\/fkt\/jeff-garmire-arizona-trail-az-2019-04-21\"><span class=\"hms__days\">15d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hms__hours\">13h\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hms__minutes\">10m<\/span><\/a> in April 2019. Needless to say that these times are very high bars for an old and bald hobby runner like me. This is an entirely new challenge to which neither the <a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/report-washington-pct-fkt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">500mi WA PCT<\/a> nor the <a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/odt-restlessly-relentless-movie-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">750mi Oregon Desert Trail<\/a> (ODT) will be comparable. Am I ready? Hell no. I haven&#8217;t even finished bagging the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BjGr0xPFQ-v\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jell-O Pringles<\/a> yet [P.S.: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/2392880\/gelatin-injury-prevention-recovery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Jell-O Could Speed Up Injury Recovery<\/a>] and the recovery from the <a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/report-alpine-lakes-grand-tour-fkt\/\">Eagle&#8217;s 33 attempt<\/a> has been slow. Thus, my only hope rests on my solid <a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/news-242mi-cougar-traverse-fkt-attempt\/\">hot yoga and tetris training<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class='dropshadowboxes-container ' style='width:auto;'>\r\n                            <div class='dropshadowboxes-drop-shadow dropshadowboxes-rounded-corners dropshadowboxes-inside-and-outside-shadow dropshadowboxes-raised-with-inside-shadow-with-outside-shadow dropshadowboxes-effect-default' style=' border: 1px solid #dddddd; height:; background-color:#ffffff;    '>\r\n                            Helen Galerakis <a href=\"https:\/\/azdailysun.com\/flagstaff-s-helen-galerakis-to-try-for-supported-fkt-on\/article_de3cd0cd-29b2-5b0d-aa94-c5100928a00b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced a northbound and supported FKT attempt for Oct 17<\/a>\u00a0and Candice Burt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.candiceburt.com\/2019\/05\/new-date-for-800-mile-arizona-trail.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plans to start on Nov 4 for a southbound supported FKT<\/a>. And there may be more, I hear. It&#8217;s going to be a busy and exciting fall on the AZT.\r\n                            <\/div>\r\n                        <\/div>\n<p>After the <a href=\"https:\/\/christofteuscher.com\/aagaa\/report-grand-canyon-r2r2r2r2r2r2r2r2r-fkt\">R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R2R FKT<\/a> last year, I was hoping to never ever again having to cross the Grand Canyon on foot. I guess that was wishful thinking. At least I will know my way.<\/p>\n<p>September is by no means the best time for such an FKT attempt, but it&#8217;s the only window I have among work, childcare, and gerbil-sitting constraints. For the first few hundred miles, I intend to move mostly at night to beat the heat. How that will work out remains totally in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>[pullquote]&#8221;There is more to life than increasing its speed.&#8221;\u00a0 \u2014 Gandhi[\/pullquote]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.teuscher-coaching.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wifey<\/a> crew of one will provide essential support by Jeep and mountain bike (P.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.podiumrunner.com\/the-story-behind-michael-versteegs-record-setting-830-mile-arizona-trail-run_158623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael had a &#8220;rotating crew of 15-plus friends&#8221;<\/a>). We have a timeline and rules and regulations.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The support approach is purposely designed to be very minimal in order to reduce the number of resupply stops while still being able to move light. We call it &#8220;no frills, no bullshit&#8221; support. The goal is to make every stop so uncomfortable that moving on seems like a better option. After all, every stop is time spent not moving, and that adds up quickly over an 800mi distance. Spreadsheets never lie.<\/p>\n<p>[pullquote]&#8221;We call it &#8220;no frills, no bullshit&#8221; support.&#8221;[\/pullquote]<\/p>\n<p>For the sake of a simplistic example, let&#8217;s assume I&#8217;d finish in 15 days (= baseline) if I wouldn&#8217;t stop (of course I will have to). If we further assume that each resupply stop takes 15min\u2014which goes by quickly in reality\u2014we get the total added stop times as shown in Table 1 below. As one can see, with only one 15min stop per day, I&#8217;d be almost 4 hours slower compared to the 15-day baseline. With four stops, that number would grow to a whopping 15h.
