What’s the longest perfectly straight line you could walk across a U.S. state without ever crossing a road?
I mapped it for 8 states. The rules: every road counts (paved, gravel, dirt, forest, 4WD), and the line has to stay on public land the whole way, end to end. The answers:
- Alaska, 531 miles
- California, 159 mi
- Washington, 107mi
- Idaho, 99mi
- Montana, 98mi
- Arizona, 56mi
- Nevada, 50mi
- Oregon, 49mi
Now a standing challenge: follow the line. End to end, single push, human power only. GPX tracks + topo maps for every state at The Longest Line!
