ODT: Trail Surface by Section
The following two figures show the Oregon Desert Trail (ODT) surface by section. Please refer to the ODT guide for a detailed trail surface description. I’m using the same terminology as on the maps.
- XC: cross-country
- Trail: single-track trail
- Roads:
- Primitive: typically an abandoned or somewhat maintained two-track road; these roads are often rocky and rugged.
- Maintained: typically a well-traveled gravel road;
- Paved: a paved road.
The figures should help hikers to determine the difficulty level of the different sections. According to the ODT guide, the approximate mileage by surface type is:
- Foot trail – 73 miles (10%)
- 4WD Dirt – 416 miles (54%)
- X-Country Travel – 267 miles (36%)
- Paved Road – 10 miles (1%)
